Driving Ford's New Focus Electric

Posted in : General

(added few months ago!)

Wayne, Mich. -- I don’t know if it’s a good thing or not — or even much of a surprise — but much of Ford’s focus (pardon the bad pun) on its new electric vehicle is all about range. I suspect that, like most things, all the customizable apps and navigational systems will prove a boon to some and anathema to others. At the very least, all those electronic widgets encourage a commitment to changing one’s driving habits common only to the dedicated enviro-weenie.

For instance, there’s an app (these days, isn’t there always?) for your iPhone, BlackBerry or Android that lets you not only monitor your Focus’s battery level from anywhere (useful from an airport in, say, Spain, to check if you have enough juice to get home when landing back in Canada) but also schedule charging to minimize electricity costs. The same app will find local charging stations (presuming there are any) and even keep a running tab on your CO2 emissions and money saved by motoring so virtuously on electricity.

£80m for Liz Taylor's bling! Every jewel has a story in record-breaking sale of most expensive private collection EVER

Posted in : For Her

(added few months ago!)

With seven husbands, 50 films and a £360million fortune to her name, Elizabeth Taylor never did anything by halves. So it seems appropriate that the star’s extensive jewellery collection has sold for more than £80million – making it the most expensive private hoard in history. Though bidders were still battling to snap up the sought-after items last night, the auction had already smashed the £45.8million record set in 1987 at a sale of the Duchess of Windsor’s gems in Geneva.

£80m for Liz Taylor's bling! Every jewel has a story in record-breaking sale of most expensive private collection EVER

Over two evenings of frantic bidding at Christie’s in New York, some items sold for as much as 150 times their reserve price. The most expensive was a 50-carat pearl, diamond and ruby necklace called La Peregrina.

Listed for between £1.2million and £1.9million, it went for £7.5million on Tuesday night, breaking two world records – the highest sum for an historic pearl and for a pearl jewel. Other items shot up by more than £1million in 30 seconds as fierce bidding wars erupted over the most coveted lots. It was a fitting tribute to the last of the Hollywood greats, who died in March aged 79.

Auctioneer François Curiel said: ‘The extraordinary results of the  jewellery sale are a tribute to Elizabeth Taylor’s expert eye for fine gemstones and jewels, as well as her stature as a legendary star and inspiring philanthropist.’Other sales of Dame Elizabeth’s art, clothing and memorabilia will be held today and Friday. It was expected that all of the auctions together would draw in £31million, but that is now likely to be beaten many times over.

Maruti cars to get expensive from January 2012

Posted in : General

(added few months ago!)

As expected earlier, auto giant Maruti Suzuki India Limited has decided to hike the prices of its portfolio of cars in the country from next month. However, the company hasn’t revealed the size of this proposed hike. With this announcement, Maruti has joined the league of all other car makers who have already announced to hike the prices of its cars in the country including General Motors India, Hyundai India, Ford India and Toyota Kirloskar Motors. These leading car makers have decided to hike prices of their portfolio models in the country, after depreciating rupee made the imports of components considerably more expensive.

Speaking to CNBC-TV18 in an interview, Maruti Suzuki India managing executive officer- marketing and sales, Mayank Pareekh, said that the current year was not really good with additional pressure from factors like fuel prices and interest rates. He added that the general sentiment in the market has not been so good. Moreover, especially for brand Maruti, due to the labour unrest which the company had, the firm lost a lot of vehicles. The company expects that for this year, it see a degrowth, though things should start improving soon.

The current portfolio of Maruti in the Indian auto market include more than half a dozen cars including small cars like A-Star, Wagon R and Alto, compact hatchbacks like Zen Estillo, Ritz and Swift, and sedans like Swift Dzire, SX4 and Kizashi. Moreover, the company is looking forward to mark its debut in the Sports utility vehicle segment with the launch of a new model in this segment next year.

Hyundai is headed upmarket

Posted in : General

(added few months ago!)

Membership in the luxury automakers’ club is extremely hard to come by. For much of the 20th century, most luxury cars sold in America came from domestic manufacturers like Cadillac and Lincoln. European marques like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar and Porsche started making serious progress in the U.S. automotive marketplace in the late 1970s and, within a decade, Japanese automakers were launching their own luxury brands stateside: Honda introduced Acura in 1986, and Toyota and Nissan followed suit with Lexus and Infiniti, respectively, in 1989. BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz are currently America’s leading luxury brands.

Hyundai is headed upmarket

But now Korean automaker Hyundai seems set to crash the luxury party. Hyundai’s first full-size luxury sedan, the Genesis, was released stateside in 2008. The company followed up with the overtly opulent and even larger Equus model two years later. Even Hyundai’s corporate cousin, Kia (Hyundai has part-owned Kia since 1998) is getting in on the act. Kia’s unveiling of its Maserati-esque GT Concept coupe at last month’s L.A. Auto Show is a fairly obvious signal that it, too, harbors upscale ambitions.

A hard landing
Hyundai got off to a shaky start in the U.S. with the 1986 release of the $4,995 subcompact Excel. The company set a first-year sales record in the United States with 168,882 vehicles sold, but the Excel soon developed a reputation for questionable reliability. Sales slumped and Hyundai became fodder for stand-up comics (Jay Leno once quipped that filling up a Hyundai doubled its value).

But unlike the similarly ridiculed Yugo (a budget-priced Yugoslavian marque sold in the U.S. from 1984 to 1992), Hyundai was able to turn its stateside reputation around. The company did this through heavy investment in state-of-the-art design and manufacturing facilities like the $30-million Hyundai-Kia Motors Design and Technical Center in Irvine, as well as long-term research and fastidious quality control. Underlining its confidence in the resulting vehicles, Hyundai backed them with a remarkable 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, the first of its kind.

By 2003, Hyundai was tied with Honda for second place (behind Toyota) in Consumer Reports magazine’s reliability ratings. Three years later, it leapfrogged Toyota to third place in J.D. Power and Associates’ Initial Quality Study, trailing only Lexus and Porsche.

The Genesis of excellence
Hyundai’s renaissance was confirmed when the Genesis was named 2009 North American Car of the Year by a jury of 50 independent automotive journalists. The rear-wheel-drive Genesis Coupe, released in the U.S. that same year, also wowed critics: In a comparison road test, Popular Mechanics preferred it to an Infiniti G37 costing $10,000 more.

“I think the Genesis was certainly a critical benchmark for Hyundai,” said Kristina de la Cuesta at Intellichoice.com. “It illustrated to the public that they were not to be thought of as the red-headed stepchild any longer.”

American drivers have responded enthusiastically. Hyundai sold more than 538,000 vehicles in the U.S. last year and set an all-time sales record in September. Having established a strong reputation for dependability and value with big-selling models like the compact Elantra and the Sonata sedan, Hyundai appears poised for a credible crack at America’s luxury auto market.

“The Genesis has been well-received and generally praised,” de la Cuesta said. “With a freshened exterior, as well as the new 5.0 R-Spec trim offered for 2012, the Genesis is currently well positioned in the marketplace against its premium sedan rivals.”

A luxury thoroughbred
Starting at $58,750, the elegant Equus, which offers distinctly upscale amenities like a massaging rear seat and adaptive-damping air suspension, goes toe-to-toe with Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7-Series and Lexus LS models costing at least $10,000 more. Just a year after its U.S release, the Equus took top spot in the large premium car segment of J.D. Power and Associates’ 2011 APEAL (Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout) Study — the first time since the survey’s 1996 inception that any vehicle other than an S-Class, 7-Series or LS has done so.

“There is no doubt: [The Equus] offers a tremendous amount of luxury features that are typically found on much more expensive cars,” de la Cuesta said.

Meanwhile, based on its continued stateside success and the favorable market response to recent vehicle launches, Hyundai might eventually take the path of some its Japanese competitors by creating a distinct new luxury brand, de la Cuesta said. “Street cred takes time, but I think Hyundai can achieve that level of success if it stays focused,” she said.

A limited edition sports car by Alessi Fiberglass: Only 50 units to be made!

Posted in : For Him

(added few months ago!)

Alessi Fiberglass amongst others has now mastered the art of using the unique fabric for vehicles. The AR-1 custom made supercar is the testimony to that, and it pretty much vows us all with the craftsmanship on display. Produced in a limited edition of 50 units, this supercar brings modern automobile engineering, futuristic design techniques, and exclusivity for all those lucky 50 buyers of the vehicle. With all that we have seen, AR-1 still doesn’t compromise on the craftsmanship status, which is something they have carried through the ages.

A limited edition sports car by Alessi Fiberglass Only 50 units to be made!

Beginning with the external chassis built majorly with fiber glass, there has been extensive use of eleven gauge steel, for the underskirting of the structure. This has made it comparatively light weight, but extremely high on tensile strength, because the particular variety of steel is known to bear the force of 100,000 lbs per square inch. So toughness won’t be an issue during rough conditions. After the structure is prepared, the coating with polyurethane is done to ensure complete protection against minor scratches, and even any corrosion. For long term owners’ peace of mind, there is an additional coating applied to ensure longer endurance of the vehicle. Just looking at these efforts speaks volumes about the concern, the car makers have for customers.

Technical superiority of the car comes to light in the V8 LS3 6.2-liter aluminum block engine which has a 103.6mm bore and 92mm stoke. In the power department, the engine generates 600HP of muscle. The transmission is a 5-speed manual one, though the option for a 6-speed manual version is always there. The notable point here, is the ability of the transmission to take the engine from 0-100 km/ph in just about 3.4 seconds, and topping at 322 km/ph. For safety, there are the power assisted vented 6-piston disc brakes, which would come to your rescue should the controlling of the vehicle become tough.

However, that isn’t all that the owner will get with this car, there is the customized interior options, which one has to specify at the time of the order. Leather, wood or any other fabrics, along with the suitable dimensions for a comfortable positioning of the seats need to be mentioned. Also included are cut pile carpeting, dual-power side mirrors, security alarm system, rear view mirror with camera for parking assistance, air conditioning and heating arrangements, GPS tracking system, and also tilted steering for perfect positioning. The pricing however, remains a mystery till the owner gives in specifications.

With the AR-1, auto-designing has indeed taken a whole new turn. We could draw comparisons with the Shelby Cobra 50th anniversary edition, which gave the option of the use of fiber glass, but out guess is that this car is just a step ahead. However, individual opinions could differ.

The largest Canadian Pink Diamond ever mined arrives at Vancouver's Lugaro Jewellers

Posted in : For Her

(added few months ago!)

Lugaro Jewellers, celebrating its 25th year in business, is excited to be part of Canadian diamond history in displaying the first pink diamond ever discovered in Canada.  The 2.75 carat pink diamond originates from the Victor Mine in Ontario operated by De Beers Canada.  Pink diamonds are considered the most expensive natural creation by weight in the world and with this in mind Lugaro Jewellers announces the arrival of this rare diamond to its Park Royal, West Vancouver retail location.

Lugaro Jewellers has been one of the greatest supporters of diamonds that are mined, cut and polished in Canada and this has lead them to purchase this Canadian first.  "Canadian diamonds resonate with our clients and we are excited to have one of the rarest of them all, a pink diamond like no other," says Steve Agopian, President of Lugaro Jewellers.  "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and to be part of the legacy of Canada's first pink diamond is quite an honour".

The brilliant oval cut, natural light pink, SI clarity diamond is set in a ring of 18-karat white gold and surrounded by smaller pink and white diamonds, 0.90 Carat TW,  designed by renowned jewellery designer Simon G and retails for $425,000 CDN. The diamond was cut and polished in the Crossworks Manufacturing state of the art polishing facility in Ontario, accompanied by a Certificate of Origin and graded by the Gemological Institute of America.

"Pink-colour diamonds are rare, and especially in Canada. I am thrilled, on behalf of the Ontario government, to represent this 2.75 carat pink diamond as the first pink diamond from the De Beers Victor Mine, cut and polished in Ontario", Michael Gravelle, Minister of Natural Resources.

"The moment we saw the rough diamond we realized we were making history", said Dylan Dix, Group Executive of Crossworks Manufacturing responsible for cutting this historic diamond.  "This is a rarity that I haven't seen over the 12 years that diamonds have been mined in Canada.  It was polished in our factory in Ontario and this is a credit to both De Beers Canada and the Ontario Government for supporting the secondary diamond industry in Canada".

Today, the pink diamond plays the role of cupid among the coloured diamonds. Pink, after all, is the colour of passion, of universal love. The hue of a pink diamond can vary and is graded from a light champagne pink to a deep purplish pink. The extreme popularity of pink diamond engagement rings worldwide is not a surprise. Ben Affleck purchased a 6.1 carat pink diamond ring for his engagement to Jennifer Lopez and David Beckham presented his wife Victoria with a $1.8-million pink diamond. In recent years, Britney Spears, Beyonce, and Helena Christiansen sported a pink diamond or two as well.

About Lugaro:
Lugaro Jewellers, the leading Canadian Diamond retailer in Western Canada, was established in 1986 as a vertically integrated all-in-one company.  Today, Lugaro operates a manufacturing facility in Burnaby and 3 retail stores in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island. As a vertically integrated company who deals directly with the Canadian diamond source, the company keeps their prices competitive.  Lugaro's commitment to excellence has earned them various awards in the industry, trust and praise from many loyal clients.

Dior Jewelry 2011 – The Latest Fashion Trends

Posted in : For Her

(added few months ago!)

The latest in fashion trends with the Dior jewelry 2011 collection is bracelets, long earrings, necklaces, and beads and this was presented as part of the Fashion Jewelry 2010-2011 collection.  As per the recommendations of the designer these pieces of jewelry should ideally be worn with open clothing.  For instance, the necklace would complement an outfit with a deep cleavage whereas bracelets would complement a dress with short sleeves.

Dior Jewelry 2011 – The Latest Fashion Trends

The Dior jewelry 2011 collections also showcased earrings that were long and may consist of several rows of thin chains such as strings of pearls.  The stylish collection was presented along with bracelets.  Models wore multiple layers of thin chains with different weavings. They also had an addition of large beads.  The collection also included brown, black and white pearls.

The Dior jewelry 2011 is a good collection of elaborate, colorful, and bold neck pieces that are gorgeous.  The spring 2011 collection from Christian Dior has a tropical Hawaiian feel to it.  The necklaces are huge chunky pieces of jewelry and the earrings are long with tassels.  Vintage jewelry is also the current trend.

Most often one can do a lot of mix and match with the old as well as the new.  There are trends that have remained for more than one season.  Beaded chains are a favorite since the last season and have been a favorite for quite a while now.  Big mixed gemstones are the favorites when it comes to beaded chains.  Chains with a mix of colored crystals and freshwater pearls are also a perfect choice.  When the clothing and jewelry is mixed and matched they make an interesting combination.  However, one must know what to mix and match.  Huge, chunky pieces of jewelry can be worn with anything and looks good with casual wear.  Handmade beads are being appreciated very well and people are no longer interested only in precious metals.

Graff Diamond Rings – Redefining Expensive Jewellery

Posted in : For Her

(added few months ago!)

Graff Diamond Rings have redefined expensive jewellery and they are in a class of their own. High end jewellery from Graff is considered to be the most fabulous in the world and are highly in demand. Movie stars and top businessmen are constantly in awe of Graff diamond rings known for their subtle cuts and beautiful colours making the jewellery very desirable and tempting.

Graff Diamond Rings – Redefining Expensive Jewellery

One of the best examples of the craze for Graff diamond rings is obvious from the demand for some fabulous pieces. One of them is a vivid yellow emerald that has a fancy look and cut and measures a total of 9.13 carats. Another flawless fancy blue diamond ring in pear shape is 10.64 carats. A third stone in intense purplish pink is the perfect example of a celebrity engagement diamond measuring 6.43 carats. It comes in an octagonal cut.  It isn’t surprising to find watches which have diamonds embedded in them either. These watches on the wrists of top movie starts, sportsmen, musicians and even business honchos, have attracted a lot of attention and awe from the onlookers.

Amongst the many stand-out Graff diamond rings is the one with a white D flawless emerald cut that has been set with a tapered baguette in white with diamond shoulders. Heart shape diamond shoulders too are quite popular. There is also a great deal of demand for a collection of Asscher cut diamond rings which are set with fancy vivid yellow diamonds, blue and even white stones with a white D, flawless in their cut and design. Oval diamond rings with heart shaped shoulders and the yellow and white engagement diamond rings in pear and oval designs are quite popular and fancy in their look.

One of the most talked about precious stones of all time is the pink diamond rink sold in November 2010. Laurence Graff, the British diamond dealer’s massive pink ring was auctioned at Sotheby’s. It was termed the Graff Pink and was set in platinum, weighing almost 25 carats. The flawless emerald cut of the diamond presented a gorgeous picture along with the shield shaped diamonds on both sides. In fact, the version of fancy intense pink is considered to be amongst the purest of pink shades. This pink diamond received a classification that is given only to 2% of the world’s diamonds. All in all Graff’s diamond rings are as much about class and high standards as they are about beauty.
